At SEMS School, the Arts are a powerful and very individual communication tool for our pupils. Through artistic media, pupils express their understanding of the world around them and their own internal world. Individual responses and diversity are celebrated, as there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to create a piece of work. Pupils can gain confidence and a feeling of self-worth. A child's work, be it a drawing or a junk model stands as a unique form of communication. For some pupils, sensory exploration and development will be the most important criteria.
Every year, the pupils, classes and the whole school take part in arts projects. These projects include internal school projects, also local competitions, and art programs. These projects are a way for pupils to participate in different experiences through local exhibitions and working with artists. The work, which is created through these different projects, are displayed around the school, which gives the pupils a sense of pride. During school performance, pupils will help to create props and scenery.
Within our art studio, we have created an environment where the pupils feel inspired and excited to explore and develop a range of new art skills. They work using a range of media including clay, plaster and mosaics. In using stimuli creatively, we have enhanced many areas of the curriculum. Artwork is regularly displayed throughout the school and has become an important element of our natural environment
